Artist: Cream Title: Strange Brew (1991/2003) Genre: Rock/ Psychedelic, Hard, Blues Format: DVD Label: Rhino Records-www.rhino.com Website: www.thecream.net I knew how good Cream was and understood their importance to the development of blues-rock music. Watching and listening to the DVD Strange Brew made those realizations more apparent than ever. What grabbed me the most was all the live footage of the band, which happens to be every song on this DVD. Oh my, was this dominant music! Ginger Baker (drums), Eric Clapton (guitar, vocals) and Jack Bruce (bass, vocals) were (and still are) all stellar musicians and together they were unmatched as a rock trio. The insightful interviews with each member were very enjoyable, giving me a good overview of the band’s beginnings and eventual demise. Some of the videos are overlaid with a psychedelic pattern, which made the band look like they were inside of a lava lamp… it was all very ‘60s. The camera work was outdated as well with shots going in and out very quickly of each band member; it made me dizzy to watch it. Keep in mind that was state of the art at the time of the filming of these performances. Nevertheless, the sound is terrific and the impact of their music in live setting really hit home with me. A special treat is the black and white footage of Jimi Hendrix doing “Sunshine of Your Love.” This one is a real keeper so get it. ©"Keith "MuzikMan" Hannaleck August 30, 2003 1.
