Daniel Christopherson
confidently breaks onto the scene with his comprehensive vision
of guitar-centric, strictly instrumental rock, One
Zillion Guitars. Christopherson deploys a
coherent style of rock-oriented, advanced guitar that combines
melodic themes with gutsy, well-phrased development that together
project a cohesive musical vision that is immediately perceivable.
He draws from an interesting base of widely varying rock
influences, most obviously in some places U-2, though his playing
far exceeds the instrumental intensity of that mainstream rock
band. His style also encompasses the influences of many of the
modern instrumental rock heros. But, Christopherson also exceeds
the sum of the parts of his influences that he draws from to
build his unique brand of rock instrumentalism that features
savvy arrangements that constantly weave and evolve while
providing a frame for Christopherson to demonstrate his sharp
fretwork.
Christopherson's guitar
style is somewhat unusual because of the widely varying
influences that he draws. At one end of the spectrum, he pulls in
the commercial rock stylisms and technique of U-2. And, at the
other end of the spectrum, Christopherson integrates the advanced
stylisms and technique of Joe Satriani. But, Christopherson is
not limited to these two influences and instead pulls in a number
of other influences to round out his comprehensive style. The
resulting sound is a collage of accessible mainstream rock themes
that are woven into complex arrangements that integrate a
combination of straight-ahead mainstream and leading edge
instrumental rock guitar techniques. But, the thread that binds
all of this in a meaningful manner is Christopherson's clarity of
musical vision that is always driving the diverse elements of his
style and composition in unison. I especially enjoyed this
combination in the manner it was applied to some musical themes
based upon U-2 motifs because it resulted in an instrumental
conceptualization of these themes that was far beyond the
original themes and brought them to an entirely new level that
seemed to bring to light the intended purpose of the original
themes.
Daniel Christopherson
demonstrates his unique musical perspective and philosophy on his
instrumental rock release, One Zillion
Guitars. The album strikes an interesting
balancing point between accessible mainstream rock and advanced
instrumental rock that should make it conducive to listeners of
either audience. Fans of progressive rock guitar should check out
this album that strives to lay down some well-conceived, complex
compositions that incorporate a solid, coherent arsenal of guitar
techniques.
