Jammin' from
Jamie Glaser, John Lewis, and Tommy Lockett is collection of free
form fusion improvisational tracks. Lewis and Lockett set down
the groove on the Drums and Bass, respectively, for Glaser to go
off with his fusion-ish extempore on guitar. The trio have some
obvious talent, though the format is not the conventional
driving, focused format one might expect from fusion. Instead, it
is more of a loose format that is intended to allow liberal
latitude for exploration and improvisation. The first track, "Stella",
is a loose guitar jam set to a groove laid down by the rhythm
section. The second track, "Footprints", is another
loose jam that integrates fragments of themes from the Beatles
classic "Eleanor Rigby", that are articulated with some
interesting harmonization. The jam is laid back, but features
some tasty phrasings in parts, though it seems to wander
aimlessly in other parts. But, that is just the nature of the
loose jam that is the format the trio improvises. The third
track, "Israel", is a funk-based blues groove with more
focus that again features the guitar extempore of Jamie Glaser.
Glaser demonstrates his array of gritty riffs, funky chops, and
speed with some sparsely occurring briskly paced interludes. The
final track, "Bass Drums", features the grooving bass
soloing of Tommy Lockett played over the groove set down by John
Lewis.
