Local 7 is Patrick Andrieu
on guitars, bass, and synthesizers with Jean Francois Graviloff
rounding out the sound on drums and percussions. This duo of
French progressive musicians sets out on Substrat
to wow their audience with their original, melody-rich
compositions, intensive development, and advanced skills with
their respective instruments. Andrieu does indeed lay down some
formidable guitar work as demonstrated by the combination of his
mature control over speed, precision, dynamics, timing, and tone.
One of the more impressive aspects of Andrieu's playing is his
ability to clearly articulate musical ideas with both technical
precision and clarity while imparting emotional content with well-crafted
inflections where he so desires. Even a cursory listen to
Andrieu's fretwork will immediately ! impress the quality of his
craft. Local 7's sound and style
is one that is rooted primarily in the tonality and constructs of
progressive rock which sometimes can seem like a path too well
traveled. But, fortunately for the listener, Local 7 breathes new
life into prog rock with their strictly instrumental (thankfully),
intensive, melodic themes, constantly shifting development, and
unpredictable directional changes. In fact, as far as prog rock
goes, this is one of the better efforts that I have heard in
recent years. Andrieu does not repeat his ideas in any trite
fashion, but instead is always searching for variations on his
themes, as well as for new themes and directional inversions. The
skill that he has in crafting his musical ideas with his
technicianry produces a result that most musicians should
appreciate. I especially like his attention to thematic
development and his invention of savory, digest! ible themes. This
is a rare talent which escapes many good musicians. On the scale of "into
it" I rate this one a thumbs up for Local 7's Substrat.
This CD provides what a lot of prog rock is lacking and has
driven hords of listeners to the camps of jazz fusion to satisfy
more complex musical tastes. So, I would not only recommend this
one to fans of prog rock, but also to fans of jazz fusion who
might be interested in advanced composition, non-repetitive
arrangements, and quality guitar work without the emphasis on
tonal exploration and outside harmonization of abstract jazz.
