Roberto Martino is an
acoustic-centric guitarist that accomplishes something remarkable
on his CD Solo.
Martino covers a wide range of styles on this CD including
classical, traditional blues, Irish and English jig. What is
remarkable about this CD is that Martino exhibits an impressive
depth in his mastery of these differing disciplines, some of
which are uncommon, and plays with such proficiency with the
intricacies involved in these acoustic-intensive styles. Martino
has a great talent for playing polyphonic parts on the acoustic
guitar and for bringing the melodies and themes of these varying
styles to life. And, the compositions that he plays are laden
with catchy tunes from traditional compositions and ballads that
would otherwise have been long lost to all of our detriment. What
is very unique about this CD is that Martino ventures into
uncommon territory well off the beaten path. He does this with
style and savvy that draws the listener into an unusual yet
compelling experience that broadens the perspective of the
audience. Martino's skills on the
acoustic guitar are quite refined and fans of acoustic guitar
music should check out this CD. In fact, all guitarists should be
interested in this CD because of Martino's coverage of styles
that will benefit any guitarist to hear his intensive usage of
advanced, uncommon technique to produce very enjoyable music that
is rich in texture and motifs. Martino covers intricate classical
compositions with virtuoso precision on one track and shifts to a
traditional blues arrangement on the next that demonstrates an
insightful creativity with blues that revives and revitalizes
long forgotten music. He then delves into a complex rendition of
a medley of archaic jigs that he resurrects with new life that
brings to light how they were meant to be played and heard.
Besides the two intensive jig medleys that demand the listeners
attention and respect, Martino again flaunts his creativity with
the blues with a slide arrangement that demonstrates an uncanny
grasp on the origins and underlying feel of the blues slide
guitar. I recommend this CD for
its ingenuity, uniqueness, finesse, and daring to venture into
uncommon territory with such dedication and conviction. Fans of
guitar-oriented music and world music should take a shining to
this CD. I was both surprised and impressed by the quality of
guitar work on this effort. If you are the type of listener that
has eclectic tastes and likes to hear something different but
well-done, check out this CD from Roberto Martino!
