Elephant Island By Adam Schabtach Atomic City Records, 2002 http://www.studionebula.com/ Elephant Island is a 67-minute single track, composed and recorded real-time in one continuous improvisation, by Colorado-based electronic musician Adam Schabtach. In his notes to this album on his website (above) Schabtach tells how he was inspired by the Antarctic wasteland and the story of the explorer Shackleton and his men, stranded for months on a desolate Antarctic bit of land named "Elephant Island." This is "classic ambient" in the style of Eno and his successors. It's also along the lines of the long "environmental" albums composed by Steve Roach and his followers. Resolutely and unchangingly in D minor all the way through, Elephant Island drifts along without much happening. Floating held chords melt into a single icy serenity, while every so often, a bit of percussion or tuned electronica such as a bell or a plucked string sound is sprinkled into the mix. As with those other ambient environments, you don't have to pay attention to this; just let it be part of the background while you're doing something quiet, such as meditating or getting a massage or even just going to sleep. Because its harmony is not dissonant, you will not feel a creepy mood, but since it's minor, you won't feel drenched in sweetness either. Hannah M. G. Shapero 3/13/04
