Elaine Radigue Trilogie de la Mort Kyema (Intermediate States) One of the coolest qualities about Trilogie de la Mort is the implication that there are two more discs of great music. Elaine Radigue calls this one Kyema (Intermediate States) and listeners are free to infer that she refers to a stage of death. Elaine uses the limited flexibility of the Tibetan Singing Bowls to reflect on the darker sides of the psyche. The subdued drones create a gray haze around listeners. The long form composition (61’22”) is a journey to the sinister edges of the introspective self. Elaine’s technique takes control and does not let go. Trilogie de la Mort, presumably Trilogy of Death or Death Trilogy, is – DUH – a three disc set from Elaine Radique. Each disc has its own theme and each theme is related to the others. Elaine combines acoustics and electronics with experimental sounds and processes to build rolling atmospheres and soundscapes. Disc one - Kyema (Intermediate) - is deep, dark and downright scary! Elaine skirts the edges of the River Styx as her drones and sinister atmospheres surround and envelop listeners. While deep listening has its rewards it can also be unsettling and even disturbing in this environment. The long form style (61’) suits Elaine’s style and avant-garde tendencies. On Kailasha, Elaine continues the theme, again using the single track, long form (56’) format. These atmospheres, however, do not skirt the banks of the River Styx. Elaine has joined Charon but not in his boat. She has waded into the fire and the drones sound the funereal dirge as they advance on unsuspecting listeners. Deep listening requires extreme caution. It does not get much darker than this! Koume - the third and final leg of the journey – drops all pretenses and goes beyond sinister. These satanic atmospheres seem to defy death and logic as they enter the synapses and attempt to distort reality. This malevolent minimalism is darker than dark. The journey is complete! This set is outstanding! It should, however, contain a cautionary warning. Only experienced listeners should take this journey! This is an essential journey because the shortest route to the Promised Land almost always goes through the desert. - Jim Brenholts
