10 words or less: Italian Fusion from the Drummer of
Arti e Mestieri
Elaboration: For the readers unfamiliar with the 70s
Italian band Arti e Mestieri you should remedy that
right away by getting their two classic albums Tilt
and Giro di Valzer per Domani. The drumming on those
two albums rivals even Alphonse Mouzon and Billy
Cobham! That said, here we have a new solo album by
that very drummer Furio Chirico but I must include
this caveat emptor... this is not the 70s! In other
words, don't expect the Symphonic fire of those
aforementioned classic albums. This album lives in the
netherworld somewhere between Spyro Gyra and Bill
Bruford's Earthworks, albeit with a distinctively
Italian flair. There are a couple of sweet, 'smooth
Jazz' numbers on Furiosamente but the album is
not completely devoid of bite. In fact, the album
builds interest as it progresses, starting with the
lighter material and moving into the pieces
reminiscent of the more fiery early Weather Report
sound. I am not a fan of so-called 'smooth Jazz' but
this album is not half bad. ~ L Perez
