Life in Balance Star One of the true signs of greatness in music is the ability to achieve the same or similar results in different styles without sacrificing integrity. Life in Balance - the wife/husband duo of Ami Sciuli and Steve Sciuli - demonstrate such greatness on Star, one of the latest in a series of CD’s that has marked 2004 as the doorway to e-music’s “Golden Age.” Steve and Ami have been on a mission for years. They promote the holistic healing arts of music and all that accompanies them. Star is the outbreath of a series that they started with Deeper, the inbreath. This disc adds the exploration of movement as a means of exploring the psyche. This is a new element of their repertoire and the contrast with their deep drones and meditative atmospheres and textures is actually quite complimentary. Steve has added synthesizers and sequenced rhythms to the sound design. He also performs on the silver flute on some tracks. But LIB is at its best when they go tribal, ethnic and ambient! Steve’s shakuhachi style is definitely not in the classic mode but it is definitely awesome and classic in its own right. Ami’s bowl drones, acoustic percussion and bells and chimes work best as minimalism. Steve’s restrained use of the synth on these pieces is a stroke of sound design genius in the “less is more” tradition. This is a great CD, indicative of the ability, desire and willingness to grow and expand horizons. Steve and Ami are at the edge, the cusp and in the center. They are also knocking on the door to the perpendicular universe! - Jim Brenholts
