Phil Niblock The Music of Phil Niblock The Music of Phil Niblock is a CD of – well – music by Phil Niblock. It is two long (25’ and 45’) pieces, each built around deep dark drones. The atmospheres evolve – completely – from Phil’s processes. There are no extraneous sounds. Years ago, John Cage created a piece for which he merely sat at the piano and did nothing. While these pieces have more substance than that, the principle is the same – “Less is more!” Phil’s drones vary slightly yet the effect has pleasing overtone qualities. This is a good meditation disc. - Jim Brenholts Phil Niblock A Young Person’s Guide to Phil Niblock (YPGPN) A Young Person’s Guide to Phil Niblock (YPGPN) is a double CD set of music by – duh - Phil Niblock. he is a master composer, sound designer and engineer. He manipulates recordings of offbeat instruments into deep dark ambient drones. On this set there are three trombone drones and a didgeridoo drone among the compositions. His processing techniques warp the sounds to the degree that the source instrument is no longer recognizable. The discs border on “refrigerator hum” minimalism and that is a compliment. Very few artists can create atmospheres in that style that do not grate. While these are dark pieces, they are neither eerie nor irritating. This is a very cool and essential set! Jim Brenholts
