Carnegie: Rock And Roll Symphony 1977 / 2001, Shroom Productions I generally like to listen to music before I learn anything about the musicians so that I can gain an unbiased opinion of the music. When I listened to Rock And Roll Symphony by Carnegie, I was thinking that this was outdated in its style and that it would have been more appropriate in the 1970s. I was also thinking that the music sounds like it was heavily influenced by groups such as Queen, ELP, and Billy Joel. It came as no surprise to me when I finally got around to reading the liner notes and all of these things were confirmed. What I liked about Rock And Roll Symphony was that there is some very talented, classically influenced piano playing. What I didn't like was the lyrics and the weakness of the guitar relative to the sophistication of the piano playing. What made ELP and Yes great was the teaming of great musicians of nearly equal caliber. Carnegie does not posess this balance with the piano playing far outweighing the other instrumentation. The musical style that is presented in this music is now superceded by the neoclassical genre that takes these concepts to an entirely new level and thankfully parts with the vocals (in most cases). There is some good piano playing on this effort which makes me hesitant to knock it down too much. But, the album is just what it advertises to be, a rock and roll symphony. And, this entails the fusion between classic rock and classical music in a symphonic packaging. It is not quite neoclassical, so if this is what you are expecting, you will be disappointed. But, if you liked the 70s concept of symphonic rock, such as ELP, Yes, and Queen, then you might like Rock And Roll Symphony by Carnegie. However, I don't think the overall result is up to par with the best efforts from these other 70s groups.
