Four80East, Nocturnal (50:33) Higher Octave Jazz 50508820 2001 www.higheroctave.com Nocturnal is the second effort from Four80East, a Toronto-based funk/fusion group piloted by multi-instrumentalist Rob DeBoer and drummer/programmer Tony Grace. Here the duo is supplemented by Jon Stewart on tenor, Andrew McPherson on flute, and Ivana Santilli on trumpet. There's certainly a "smooth jazz" and palatable R&B element to the group's sound, but the beats and sonic dimensions (samples, breaks) bring it closer to trippy funk and electronica. The production is hip and so is the playing - shimmering Rhodes and Moog, crisp Carlton-esque guitars, warm tenor and ethereal flute. Stewart's Eddie Harris-like wah sax on "Sweet Tooth" is a highlight. Great bachelor pad music with an edge. ~David R. Adler
