New Blizzard Symphony: A Christmas Heirloom
2001, Shroom Productions

A Christmas Heirloom is a collection of Christmas music comprised of
vocals and somewhat moderately progressive instrumentation. The
instrumentation is highlighted by some decent acoustic fretwork in
spots. Though the remainder presented a polished effort, I found the
music lacking in compositional and technical depth, for the most part.
However, I doubt that this was the goal intended by this band of
musicians that appear to have set out to create a collection of original
Christmas music built around these mostly original compositions that
probably are not aimed at a progressive audience. If they are, they fell
short of that mark. However, I think there is probably an audience for
this type of music. But, I am not sure who this may be.

The highlight of this CD for me was the instrumental rendition of
"Ukranian Carol", a well-known Christmas favorite. The
instrumentation on "Ukranian Carol" was good enough to attract my
attention and it seems to have been a focal point for the instrumental
aspect of this effort. I also got a kick out of "The Day After Christmas",
probably because this is my birthday, and also "Two Snowflakes
(Exactly Alike)" for its premise and musical characterization. So,
although my disdain for vocal and lyrical pollution of good
instrumentation was a barrier in my acceptance of this music, I was
able to find a few compositions on the CD that saved it from oblivion
(the clutches of my dog, Sugar, as a doggie toy). But, I will put forth
that my view is that if you are going to put vocals with music, the
singing had better be approached just like any other instrument and
the vocal abilities should be measured just as players are measured on
other instruments. In this case, I think it is not that the singing is bad,
but it just does not grab you as it does with great singers. The singing
lacks conviction and presence.
