Chaos Theory by Savant Guard is a straight-ahead instrumental rock album featuring guitar, bass, and drums. I was disappointed with this album for a number of reasons, though I can appreciate the efforts required to invent an instrumental album out of thin air. The rhythms and themes were lacking in animation and were instead stale and uninspiring. Also, I found the lead work to be primitive relative to the status quo of modern instrumental music both in the tonality and techniques deployed. Compared to the industry giants, such as Shawn Lane, Frank Gambale, or Joe Satriani, the level of sophistication and musical depth does not even come close to making an effort to challenge these guys. And, though I do not think that one must be a virtuoso instrumentalist to produce great music, the composition on this album is seemingly commensurate with the level of instrumental proficiency of the players. It could just be my personal tastes, but Chaos Theory does not appeal to me or to the criteria by which I evaluate music. I am always sorry to knock anybodys painful efforts to create music, but this one just does not make the grade for me.
