Sarah Pillow: Nuove Musiche (CD, 47:12); Buckyball Records, 2000 E-mail: n/a Cyberhome: http://www.buckyballmusic.com 10 words or less: 17th century lyrics sung to Jazz/Rock Fusion Elaboration: Combining the beautiful voice of Sarah Pillow with the Fusion backing of musicians from the bands Brand X and Tunnels probably seemed like a good idea on paper. Indeed the ethereal opening track almost had me convinced but what makes the opening track successful is the absence of percussion. Once the Drums come into play, the 17th century lyrics blend with the Rock rhythms like oil and water. While I will admit to a certain bias against Vocals in Fusion, this is not the sole reason for what I feel is wrong with this combination. The lyrics have a very pastoral quality, especially the ones sung in Latin, and to put them against a backdrop of heavy Fusion just doesn’t work. Ms. Pillow has a wonderful voice and The guys from Brand X and Tunnels play some mean tunes but never the twain shall meet. ~ L Perez
