John Polito
, Crossing the Line (47:10) Seventh Wave/Green Note SWP 1584, 2001 818-298-6585 Info@greennotemusic.com John Polito, the California-based pianist/keyboardist, plays it pretty safe on this debut CD. He's joined by some very capable musicians - Doug Lunn on bass, Martin Florez on drums, Andy Abad on guitar, and Ramiro Belgardt on cello, among others. But the music, an indecisive melange of smooth jazz and new age, doesn't offer much beyond ear candy. Three piano/cello duets, "Time and Space," "Union," and "Heaven Knows," give the album some structural continuity. On "In Motion" Polito and Belgardt are joined by violinist Charlie Bisharat, and this threesome pulls together the most interesting music on the disc by far. Otherwise, one can take or leave the Latin cliches of "Aurora Alegre" and the three tracks featuring syrupy strings. ~David R. Adler, EER-MUSIC.com
